Parent Information Letter

The following was sent to parents regarding the Summer Learning Adventure:

May/2009

Dear Parents,

This letter is being sent to parents with children who have been invited and have indicated that they will be attending this year’s summer school—now known as “Summer Learning Adventure.” Please read this letter in its entirety and keep it for reference. Summer learning activities will not be “school as usual.” Every effort will be made to design fun learning activities around reading, math and science. Our program will be a little different this year—it has a new name and it is being extended from three to five weeks. We will also have two Summer Learning Adventures being held. Students in Pre-School to 3rd grade will attend at our new Burton Elementary School with Mr. Jordan Busby as Principal. Students in 4th to 8th grade will attend at Madison Middle School with Mr. Scott Shirley as Principal.

This year, we have close to three hundred students in Grades K-8 that will be taking part in a five-week program. The dates for our Summer Learning Adventure are Monday, June 8th through Friday, July 10th. No activities will be held on Friday, July 3rd in observance of the July 4th holiday. Because time is so short, attendance will play a big part in the success that your child achieves. Please take note of the following:

Transportation

Busing will be provided from your child’s local school. These will serve as morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up points. Because bus drivers will have more than one school to be responsible for, it is imperative that parents, guardians or babysitters are punctual in dropping off and picking up. For the safety of all children, please wait with your child at the school until the bus has arrived; likewise, bus drivers have been instructed to not leave children unattended at the school. Please be aware that if a parent or other responsible party is late in picking up your child from the local school, it will become the responsibility of the parent to transport their child to and from Burton Elementary or Madison Middle School. We ask for your patience the first few days as bus routes are being planned out.

Please take note of the following times for school pick-up and drop-off times. In years past, these times have changed as the routes become more familiar. To help ensure that the busing goes smoothly, please be prompt in dropping off and picking up your child. If you are planning to carpool or drive your child to Burton Elementary or Madison Middle School for summer school every day, please be punctual in dropping off (by 8:30 a.m.) and picking up (by 12:30 p.m.).

Hours

Summer School begins at 8:30 a.m. and dismisses at 12:30 p.m. For the safety of your child, please do not drop your child off at school earlier than 8:20 a.m. Teacher planning and prep time is between 8:00-8:30 a.m. School personnel will not be out on duty until 8:20 a.m. Buses start arriving to take students home or to their local schools between 12:20-12:25.

Lunch

Students in Pre-School through 3rd Grade will get a break prior to lunch being served, beginning at 11:00 a.m., and a short break after lunch. Students in Grades 4-12 will have a somewhat different schedule and their lunch time will be the last ½ hour of the day. Lunch is free for all students attending Summer Learning Adventure.

Early Dismissal from Summer Learning Adventure

If you come to the school to pick up your child early for any reason, please make sure that you check them out in the office. If you need to withdraw your child for any reason, please inform the office so they can be taken off our enrollment rather than merely marked absent.

Discipline

Because time is so short, school personnel do not want to spend time dealing with discipline issues. In the event that a student is sent to the office for misbehavior, insubordination or unsafe behavior, etc., the following will take place:
First Offense – the student will visit with the principal and parents will be notified.
Second Offense – the student will visit with the principal and parents will be asked to come to the
school for a conference.
Third Offense - the student will be removed from summer school.

Contact Information & Cell Phone Use

Cell phones should not be brought to summer school. A telephone is available to the students for emergencies. If you feel that a cell phone is necessary for your student, they will need to turn off the ringer and not use the phone during class time.

In years past, we have found that trying to locate parents in the event of an emergency has been difficult because of changes to phone numbers and addresses. For the safety of your child, please answer questions and provide up-to-date information on the enclosed Summer Learning Adventure Information Sheet. In the event that parents cannot be reached, please provide local emergency or alternative contact information. It does no good to contact someone who is living in another city or state.

Please return the information sheet to your student’s school office no later than May 15th. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Mr. Busby at 359-3332 or Mr. Shirley at 359-3333.

Thank you,

Jordan Busby
Burton SLA Principal
Scott Shirley
Madison Middle School SLA Principal

P. S. On the first day of summer school, students in Grades Pre-School to 3rd Grade will meet in the Burton School gym at 8:30 a.m., and Grades 4-8 will go to the Madison Middle School Commons area by the fish tank. They will then be separated and taken to their classrooms by the teachers.
